Hello -

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

Ever wonder – why the green? Why the shamrocks? And for pity sakes, why all the pinching?

Cities all over the U.S. celebrate with parades and festivities in honor of the Irish heritage and its rich culture and traditions. We’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember, but why?

Okay, here’s why. Saint Patrick (Maewyn Succat) was born in Britain during the 4th century, changing his name after he became a priest. When he was just 16, he was kidnapped by a group of Irish raiders and sold into slavery in Ireland.

During this difficult time of captivity, he found courage and strength in his faith in God, praying that one day he would return to his homeland.

Six years later, he escaped to France and began his studies to become a priest and later a bishop. When he was 60, Saint Patrick felt he was called by God to return to Ireland as a missionary. And because of the years spent in captivity in Ireland, he was quite familiar with the customs of the people.

He traveled from village to village, often using an everyday example, the plentiful green shamrocks, as a metaphor (three leaves) to explain God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teach the Celtic people about Christianity.

The shamrock (having three leaves, yet one plant) enabled the Irish people to imagine the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit as each of the leaves. Saint Patrick is credited with converting their country to Christianity.

The patron saint of Ireland died on March 17 and the Irish people set aside the day to mourn. Mourning turned to commemorating him and celebrating his life.

Saint Patrick was just an ordinary man who, in trying to bring Christ’s love to the Irish people, lived an extraordinary life. May we all aim for that extraordinary life - and discover our own true “pot of gold” waiting for us at the end!

So there you go, lads and lassies. And don't forget to wear your green this year – or you just might get pinched! (Why? I do NOT know!)

An Irish Blessing
May the road rise up to meet you,
may the wind be always at your back,
may the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rain fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Shamrock bread
SHAMROCK CINNAMON BREAD
  • - Canned refrigerated bread stick dough
  • - Green colored sugar
  • - Cinnamon

Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray or line with aluminum foil. To create the clover shape, mold 3 sections of bread sticks into hearts and press them together as shown. Attach a small stem, decorate, bake according to package directions.
Make this tasty creation while explaining the tradition of the shamrock. Or if you're looking for a fun and festive, yet easy way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, add green food coloring to your favorite pancake batter. Our tradition is to serve green pancakes with "green" scrambled eggs and green milk for breakfast. Or serve green mashed potatoes for dinner.

CELEBRATE this day with your loved ones! It only takes a little extra effort to make lasting memories! (As seen in Family Fun.)
