Christmas Traditions

For years I’ve struggled to create the perfect Christmas Eve tradition. We always attend a church service and open one present, but I wanted a special and unique tradition. Even the dinner menu varied from year to year.

In addition, each year my "goal" was for our family to light an advent candle and read the corresponding Bible verses together on the four Sundays prior to Christmas. Never happened. (I know you know.)

Finally, I came up with a wonderful Christmas Eve tradition that I love and want to share with you all -- just in case you, too, are perhaps seeking new traditions to share with your loved ones.

First of all, I get a kick out of fondue, but seldom go to the trouble. So, a few years ago, I requested a fondue pot from each one of my three kids for my November birthday (pretty nifty timing, I might add). Now, after the Christmas Eve church service, we look forward to our new fondue tradition consisting of:

Fondue pot #1: Cheesy appetizer
Fondue pot #2: Steak and chicken
Fondue pot #3: Chocolate dessert (with a Jesus “angel” food birthday cake for dipping)

However, UN-lit advent candles still prevailed. Then it occurred to me - why not take the four weeks of advent and roll them into one gathering on Christmas Eve after our fondue meal?

So that’s what we’ve done the last few years and I have to tell you, it’s my favorite tradition. I almost look forward to this evening more than Christmas Day. It holds the true meaning of Christmas before all the hoopla hits the next day. All you need is:

  • 1 wreath (placed in the middle of the table)
  • 4 candle holders (spaced evenly around the perimeter)
  • 4 tall candles
  • 1 big white candle (placed in the center)
  • Bible

Using a candle lighter, we each take turns reading the scripture verses (see below), while lighting a candle. If your children are small, you can team up.

Candle #1: "Prophecy” candle – Isaiah 7:14; 9:6- 7
Candle #2: “Angel News” candle – Luke 1:5-38
Candle #3: A "Messiah is Coming” candle – Micah 5:2- 5; Luke 2:1-5
Candle #4: A “Baby is Born” candle – Luke 2:6-20
Candle #5: “Eternal Life” – John 1:9-13; John 3:16

Feel free to print this off or add a few of your own favorite verses. It's a great opportunity to discuss and answer questions between candles. Enjoy the season and remember the reason. Take time to get to know one another – and take time to get to know the real reason to celebrate.

Merry Christmas and may God richly bless you and your family!

  • SHOPPING: Get it done, bottom line - "What do you want? I have a limited amount of time."
  • GIFTS: Anything that will help them "accomplish" things.
  • PARTIES: Thinks, "too many people, too little time."

THE "I" PERSONALITY STYLE:
  • ENVIRONMENT: Prefers fun, friendly, and exciting!
  • SHOPPING: "Let's shop 'til we drop, spend 'til the end, and buy 'til we die! We'll figure out how to pay later!"

  • PARTIES: The more, the better! Let's go, go go!

THE "S" PERSONALITY STYLE:

  • GIFTS: Traditional, thoughtful, and keepsakes.
  • PARTIES: One or two very close friends is the best get-together.

THE "C" CHILD PERSONALITY STYLE:
  • ENVIRONMENT: Prefers structure with procedures, accuracy, and quality.
  • SHOPPING: Makes a list, checks it twice, marks it off, done. If it's not on the list, forget it.
  • GIFTS: Logical, small parts and details - will read the directions before assembling.
  • PARTIES: The noise, the people, the hoopla is too much stimulation. Give them a task to complete for down time.
Enjoy the holiday "styles" with your friends and family! Remember, when you understand personality styles, you know that no personality style is right or wrong -- just different! ______________________________________ _________________________________________

THE GREATEST GIFT OF ALL...
“...an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call his name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins. ...Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,' which is translated, 'God with us.'" - Matthew 1:20-23 (NKJV).
(Yes, God has always been and will always be -- with us.)
